Baked chicken recipes just seem to hit the spot don't they? Usually roasted with potatoes and other vegetables, they are great way to serve up a complete, flavorful meal.
The History of the Sandwich
Surprising to find out that sandwiches have a long and ancient history, beginning with the ancient Jewish sage Hillel the Elder. It is said that he put Paschal lamb and bitter herbs between matzo (or flat, unleavened bread) during Passover, which essentially created the first sandwich.
During the Middle Ages, thick slabs of coarse and usually stale bread were used as plates - called "trenchers," and food was placed on top of them. After a meal, the food-soaked trencher was fed to a dog, less fortunate beggars, or eaten by the diner. This basically became what is now known as an "open-faced sandwich."
However, what's more interesting is where the name "sandwich" actually came from. It was named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. Montagu was an 18th-century Spanish aristocrat who liked to play cards, in particular cribbage... and he liked to eat meat while playing. By putting his meat between bread he could continue playing cards without getting his hands or his cards greasy. Pretty inventive fellow!
